Pesky Virus sometimes get past even super-geeks.

Wednesday, 08 July 2009 12:57

It happens. The war against Virus's, viruses, virii, is endless and ever changing.  Sometimes, even with multiple virus scanners, a new virus can slip through. Yes, even on super-geek's computer.  Anyone who thinks they are smart enough to catch every possible attack is just an uninformed fool.

There are so many paths of attack, especially on Windows. (you ARE patching, aren't you?).  Mac and Linux users might be safer (not 100% though), but let's be real... percentage wise, these users a minority.

malwarebytes - clean your computer of evil-doersSo, what does a geek do when infected, or suspects an infection? Well, besides the standard virus scanning, there is a powerful program that can really scrape the crap off your computer. MalwareBytes.org.  I know, it actually sounds like one of those fake anti-spyware programs that pop up a virus warning so you install their software which is actually spyware.   Oh... but it's not.  Spyware actually looks for this software to try to disable it, because they know they can't hide from MalwareBytes.

Serve, not Sell

Friday, 22 May 2009 06:27

I was talking with a few people about their options for web hosting, and I mentioned that I am not interested in getting their business. I just want to make sure they have the right solution for their needs.  I'm lucky, being busy enough to not worry about getting new business, which gives me the freedom to "Serve, not Sell".

I liked the term so much, I decided to see if anyone had Trademarked it, as if I invented something special. Dopey me. Of course it is used, though it seems, as a sales technique.

Windows Update nVidia 6100 gives black screen

Friday, 17 April 2009 17:54

Twice this got me. Used Windows Update to keep all the drivers updated. It tells me there is a new driver for my nVidia Geforce 6100 card. Great.

I install all the updates and restart the computer. All seems good, getting upto the Windows XP splash screen. Then, the screen goes blank. Not completely blank, just 99% blank. I can see a thin sliver of the background color of the desktop at the top of the screen. Ouch.   Here comes a lost hour or so...

Is Outsourcing good for a Start-up?

Wednesday, 22 April 2009 08:05

There is an interesting, free 31 page report about outsourcing for web entrepreneurs which points out that it might not be the best way to get your business started on the web.

This report is generating some SERIOUS discussion:
http://www.outsourcingconspiracy.com

It shows you why outsourcing is just a fad and how it really doesn't work that well for most people trying to start an online business.

Skeptical? Let's face it. These days, outsourcing is BIG. People are busier than ever, and outsourcing work to people on is the simplest way to free up your time.

It sounds good, but the question is: does it work?

Microsoft.com not compatible with IE8?

Thursday, 19 February 2009 19:01

"Microsoft is tracking incompatible Web sites for its upcoming Internet Explorer 8 browser and has posted a list that now contains about 2,400 names — including Microsoft.com.

Apparently, even though Microsoft's IE8 team is doing the 'right' thing by finally making IE more standards-compliant, they are risking 'breaking the Web' because the vast majority of Web sites are still written to work correctly with previous, non-standards-compliant versions of IE."

OK, I'm a geek and I get a great chuckle out of this.

Not a simple as Copy/Paste

Friday, 09 January 2009 10:27

Just copy/paste content into a website. Easy, right?
Should just take 2 minutes, right?

Wrong.
Yes, it can be quick and simple to copy and paste into a web page, whether you are using Joomla, Wordpress, Dreamweaver or FrontPage/Expression. But how will it look?   I noticed this after adding a simple copy of the Readme for RootKit Hunter the other day. A simple copy/paste of plain text took about a half-hour to properly format, which should remind Web Designers to consider that time in their expenses.
