Should you know who is sending you emails? Like Caller ID on your phone, it's important to know who is actually trying to contact you. With a phone, we can decide to pickup or not. We can even set up the phone to reject any calls from callers blocking their number.

How many logins do you have for websites? MySpace, Yahoo, Google, AOL, webmail, Amazon, Ebay, PayPal. And those are just the major sites. Then there are the individual Forums you visit, some frequently, some only once in a while.
How can you keep track of all of those logins? It's very very simple if you are using RoboForm. Remember logins and passwords, and automatically fill in forms on websites.

It's Easy To Create and Manage Your Website That's what 'they' say. Anyone can do it. Just login and manage everything, including:
- DNS settings (A, CNAME, MX, NS, SOA, TXT, PTR, SPF)
- Setup parking domains
- POP3 setup
- SFTP to edit your PHP
- prevent hacking of your website
- and more...
It's easy. Your cousin's neighbor's nephew does it after school and can probably help if needed. So, you're all set. Go.

For those who wonder what some of us geeks might use for Virus protection, I use AVG Antivirus. Why? It's not because they have a free option. (free for personal use)
It's because it doesn't slow down my computer.

Getting in the Internet Search Engines has always been a topic of changes facts. Google and Yahoo (and the rest) seem to change their rules (special secret algorithms) monthly. What worked last month might not be the best option this week. It can be an endless job keeping on top of all of it.
But, there is a way to bypass all that Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Shuffle. SEO Shuffle, a term I just made up and think will write more about later, is the endless tweaking and altering of your site for keyword saturation, metatags, reciprocal linking, and landing pages. Bypass that.

What is this site? Who is this site? Why am I here?
Yes, all valid questions. Put simply, this site is just a storage place for info that I find useful for different purposes.
It could be tips YOU, the reader could use, and find through search engines. Or tips you can share with others that seem to need a little assistance. A big part of it is tips that *I* can use as reminders of how I might have done something.

Cheap Web Hosting? Yes. There are plenty of discount hosting companies. You probably see ads for them, or your techie friends might tell you about places to get hosting for as cheap as $3 a month!
Those companies work on volume, and though they may have good support, they still expect a certain level of skill and knowledge from the customer.

I've had a few questions about anti-virus software lately.
Some about "expiring AVG", and others about Norton or McAfee
AVG users: The free version is NOT running out. But you need to upgrade to 7.5 of the software.
The regular website 'hides' the free version, but here is the direct link for it: AVG Free AntiVirus
Just download to your desktop (or wherever you download files) and run the setup program.

I have a link to free virus protection at my website. It's AVG Antivirus.
When you get to their site, they hide the link for the free version. The paid version is still half the price of Norton, but you can get by with the free version.
- Go to their Products menu (on the left). After you click on it, it opens a product list.
- Find AVG FREE Edition in the list. Click.
- Scroll down. There will be a Download section with a link to the AVG Free Advisor. Click.
Now you're on the free site. Download. Save to the Desktop, or somewhere you will remember where the file goes.
Before installing, remove Norton. It will take a while, as it is a big hog.2008-May edit: Note that this opinion is from 2006. Things change, so try to base decisions on recent reviews.

You'll still need Internet Explorer for some sites, like banking, Post Office, and other sites that use ActiveX controls on their sites.
But, for the vast majority of sites, you'll be much better with FireFox.
Download and install.
Then, once installed, let it become your default browser.
It usually grabs your favorites from IE at setup.
You won't be bothered with as many popups, and you won't have to worry about the next Internet Explorer security hole.
That's it for now. I'll try to get a list of usefull add-ons for Firefox that should make surfing even better. |
