Tech Tips

I found this on the web recently. The person was trying to find a solution to an issue, and it looked like only their Server Admin would have access to what needed fixing. It doesn't matter what the issue is:

It's failed on 6 domains now.. and My host is MIA
Some college student or some thing and he's not on right now. Help.

This is not meant to be a criticism of college students. Some of the biggest companies in the world were started in a dorm room or garage by students. Microsoft, Dell, Google, Yahoo. But, you can see the general 'feel' of the comment, as they don't feel like they can rely on the host.

It doesn't matter if the host is a 10yr old with braces, as long as you can rely on them. And to be fair to the comment above, it wasn't stated how long the host was MIA. I just found the mood of the statement of interest.

Who is your host? Who is the server administrator when things need a-fixin'? Is it a big company, or small?  If big, they probably offer 24/7 call support? But, do the people answering the phone know anything past the basic support?

Try to find a balance between your needs, and your host.  If you are technically skilled, you can probably get by with one of the large companies offering cheap hosting, since you can probably handle most of your issues yourself.

But, if you are still using AOL, and barely know how to get to myspace, or don't even know what myspace and youtube are, then you might want to make sure you get a host that takes care of all the little things for you.
